Weight loss and diabetes

Doctor Christopher Still, D.O., director of Geisinger Medical Center for Nutrition and Weight Management, conducted a further research on the disease of diabetes and in his study he concluded something notable. According to his conclusion, losing weight can in fact keep diabetes in check. The main reason for this is because Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes, accounts for 90 to 95 percent of all generally diagnosed diabetes and it happens that all of them are directly attributed to being overweight or obese.

For this particular phenomenon, Doctor Still and the rest of the medical community who had intimate knowledge of such have christened it ‘diabesity’. Such a specific condition would variedly range from mild sugar imbalance to actual diabetes itself. The general obesity rate in United States during the early 1960’s was merely 13%. But ever since year 2008; the obesity rate has hiked up, rising on the elevated level of 30%.

As years continue the same rate may perhaps climb up due to the continuing problem of obesity among Americans. Obese people’s physical disposition generally had a natural difficulty, if not the inability, of maintaining normal blood sugar level. This is an easy condition for diabetes to thrive. However; losing as much as 5 to 10 percent of the total body weight have several wonderful positive effects such as lower blood sugar, lower blood pressure, and improved cholesterol levels. All of these ideal conditions are more than suitable in keeping diabetes in check, warding them at bay.

Regular exercise, along with the right nutrition and certain possible restrictions in the diet to control blood sugar levels are better, if not the best, alternatives. Indeed prevention is better than cure and nothing could be better than this traditional conventional method, losing weight especially through exercise, in order to keep diabetes in check.
